Himarë Best Beaches, Albania
Himarë is our favourite place in Albania, for its fantastic food, nice people and, above all, the most wonderful beaches we found in Albania. In August they are crowded, but absolutely not so crowded as in Ksamil.
What we really suggest you, if you are in Albania in August, is to spend a couple of days in Saranda and then come to Himarë Best Beaches!
Himarë Best Beaches: Gjipe Beach
Wow. This is truly one of the last paradise corner in Europe.
Cristalline water, few people also in August, just a small bar as turistic infrastructure serving hamburgers, soft drinks and some alcoholics.
Of course to arrive there you have to sweat a little bit. “No pain, no gain”, am I wrong?
Well reach it is not so difficult in any case: you have to drive 20 minutes from Himarë in direction Dhermi.
Pay attention to road signs and look for indications to St.Theodore Monastery. When you find them, take that street. After some minutes you have to leave your car in a private parking (300 LEK) and start walking for 25 minutes, more or less.
Try to avoid the warmest hours, because it can be a long walk under the sun. Use good shoes and absolutely avoid flip flops ora any kind of open shoes. When you walk open your eyes and try to see many of the bunkers built here by the former dictator Hoxha. They are hidden in vegetations or just camouflaged between rocks, but it is fun to look for them while you walk.
When you will finally arrive to the beach, you will feel like in Paradise.
There are no words to describe that, so just have a look.
PS. You can also visit the St.Theodore Monastery on your way back. The street to arrive there is completely restructured, while the Monastery is…falling to pieces!
Himarë Best Beaches: Livadh Beach
Imagine those carribean pictures, where a lucky guy just stand in front of a wonderful sea, tasting an amazing cocktail, sitting under a nice beach umbrella.
Probably you are thinking: uh, nice, but that’s quite expensive. Now cancel the last word and put: economic. And now you are at Livadh Beach.
A wonderful spot, not so crowded, and full of touristic amenities perfect to enjoy your stay.
An example: we had a great luch with greek salad, french fries, tzatziki and beers for 8 euros. With tips.
Ah, and we wanted to rent deckchairs and umbrella, but since we have been at one of the local resturant, the staff gave them to us for free. Same as in Italy, no?
Himarë Best Beaches: Jal Beach
A nice, well prepared beach with clear waters, many amenities and easy to reach.
It is a very nice spot, but we prefer Livadh because it is bigger and you feel more free.
Himarë Best Beaches: Porto Palermo
Just few kms south of Himare lays this small island connected to the land artificially, after the construction of the local venetian castle in the 19th Century (then took by Ali Pasha). Probably saying that it is one of the best beaches around Himare is a mistake, because the water is very clean, but the area is quite dirty (people leave their rubbish, instead of collecting it), with abandoned buildings populated by pastors with their goats.
In any case we believe you have to stop by to visit the well preserved Ali Pasha Castle, offering a stunning view of the incredible area around.
Visiting its towers, kitchen, corridors and secret areas costs only 100 LEK. Absolutely worth it.
From the castle, if you look north, you can see the old tunnel of submarines used during the Hoxha dictatorship, while on the mountains there are so many bunkers you’ll probably spend a loooong time count them all!
Of course you can have also a bath there, as many people do. We are absolutely sure that, during years, development and tourism will make their course, transforming this curious not preserved island in one of the most visited beach in Albania.
